Making Pictures in the Cold
If you are a northerner like me, winter's bite has come on strong in the last few days. Chicago's high yesterday was twenty-nine degrees...brrrr.
Whenever the seasons change, my photographs shift along with them. I am always flooded with sea of new ideas as I watch the fall shift into winter.
I am fortunate to have a project that can take advantage of all four seasons, but many photographers don't have this luxury. Brian Lesteberg and Lars Tunbjork both have projects that come to mind. I will be channeling their drive to create work in the face of chilly temperatures when I suit up to go out and shoot tomorrow.
Lesteberg makes photographs during hunting season, which only happens as late fall moves into early winter. He grew up in a family of hunters and has drawn from personal experiences to create the series Raised to Hunt.

Lars Tunbjork's Vinter series is all about the dreary moods of winter. Of the work he says:
“I often feel beside myself in the winter time, and I try to go to warmer and lighter places. But the last couple of years I have travelled into the winter and darkness instead. Into areas, conditions and encounters in which I don’t really know where the outer and inner begins. And even less where it ends”.

vinter is my favorite book. i also found his "home" in a bookstore for $20, which i then sold. if you look at what it's selling for on the internet, you'll understand why!
If there's one thing I don't enjoy much, it's helping you photograph in 10 degree weather.
Any other time, mostly, it's a real treat.
Daniel- I agree, Vinter is incredibly haunting and much more interesting than Home. For a grand I would definitely sell my (nonexistent) copy and buy myself some film.
Zach- you are a real trooper.
